I can’t believe I just watched the footage of the Kelly Thomas police beating debacle. I’m literally disgusted right now to the point where I’m shaking. Nobody deserves to die the way he did. Did he resist? Yes. Was he mentally distressed? Yes. Now, I couldn’t quite make out what they were arresting him for in the first place, but I’m sure there was a good reason, however, whatever the reason, and whatever resistance he gave the multiple armed officers did not warrant the beating he suffered. I don’t know the police officer’s rulebook or code of conduct or whatever that tells these officers how to handle a resisting suspect, but there is nothing in the video that shows reason for bashing him repeatedly in the head with a flashlight, standing on his chest, and as one of the officers so delicately puts it, “smashed his face in with his taser.” Now if the rulebook or whatever says that that is appropriate force to take on an unarmed man, that is fucked. It doesn’t make it right, and I can’t believe there are people defending them saying that if that is what their department seems fit, then it is not their fault. As people, we should know that just because someone tells us or it is written down somewhere that it’s okay, doesn’t make it right.
RIP Kelly Thomas, I didn’t know you, you probably weren’t that great of a person, but I’m sorry that you spent your last days the way you did. Nobody deserves that.
